When the naval officer asks who is in charge, Jack starts to step forward to challenge Ralph's claim of leadership but is stopped perhaps by the recognition that now the old rules will be enforced. Jack's role in the novel is an allegory to human nature. The book takes place in the midst of an unspecified war. Given the thrill of "irresponsible authority" he's experienced on the island, Jack's return to civilization is conflicted. They then flee, now believing the beast is truly real. (And if you're thinking that this all sounds a why did E.B. White write little racistwe think you're right. He is one of the leaders of British boys stranded on an uninhabited island. He does not receive the votes of the members of a boys' choir, led by the red-headed Jack Merridew, although he allows the choir boys to form a separate clique of hunters. His domain is the emotions, which rule and fuel his animal nature. Ralph, now deserted by most of his supporters, journeys to Castle Rock to confront Jack and secure the glasses. The situation degenerates into a war, culminating in Piggy and Simon's murders and the whole island being set alight in order to kill Ralph. You can help by adding.
