William Morris, who, in 1861, founded a firm of interior decorators and manufacturersMorris, Marshall, Faulkner, and Company (after 1875, Morris and Company)dedicated to recapturing the spirit and quality of medieval craftsmanship. Henry van de Velde, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Will Bradley, and a host of other artists and architects are just a few of those artists variously described as straddling this boundary, which remains rather unclear. To this date many of their designs are copied by designers and furniture manufacturers. At the Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans, specifically dedicated to female artistic education, only the male potter (usually Joseph Meyer) was permitted to throw the vessels that the women students painted.
